About 20 years ago, my friend Mara was a reporter for a local New York City news station and she worked for the legendary reporter, Gabe Pressman. In a hilarious piece she later wrote for The Village voice about her job, she described him as looking like an old lesbian. Gabe Pressman is a genius in the local news world. He also really did look like an old lesbian. Less so now. I think you have to be a youngish or middle-aged man to look like an old lesbian. Although you can look like an old man if you’re a middle-aged lesbian or an old lesbian. Curious. Here is a picture of a young Gabe Pressman with Mayor Wagner and President Truman.

I was reading this really good piece in Slate by Joshua Glenn about The Amabassadors and toothpicks, which made me go to his blog for The Boston Globe called Brainiac, which talked about this brilliant translation of The Wasteland into that wonderful, silly LOLcat talk… “april hates u, makes lilacs, u no can has…”
